Это выражение из американского сленга, появившееся в 1950-х гг. и означающее долгую и нудную историю. The Megillah — ивритское слово, означающее свиток, манускрипт (scroll); является одной из пяти книг Ветхого Завета (Песни Песней Соломона, Книга Руфь, Плач Иеремии, Екклесиаст, книга Эсфирь), которые читаются в определённые еврейские праздники. Полная фраза на идиш: a gantse Megillah.
